For years, Illinois medical cannabis patients have voiced frustration over being forced to pay recreational taxes when shopping at non-medical dispensaries. Now, a newly introduced bill could finally bring some much-needed relief.
HB 5784 proposes several changes aimed at improving accessibility and convenience for medical cannabis patients across the state. One of the biggest updates would allow dispensaries to offer drive-through and pickup services, something many patients and advocates have argued is long overdue. For seniors, parents, and individuals with disabilities or mobility issues, these changes could make accessing medication significantly easier.

The bill would also extend dispensary operating hours until 2 a.m., giving patients more flexibility to shop around work schedules, family obligations, or medical needs. Another major change would allow medical patients to purchase products from any dispensary in Illinois instead of being tied to one designated location, creating far more freedom and access to medication.
HB 5784 also seeks to increase possession limits for medical patients, reducing the need for frequent trips to dispensaries for products they are already legally permitted to purchase.
Supporters of the bill believe these changes would modernize Illinois’ medical cannabis program while improving accessibility, convenience, and overall quality of life for patients throughout the state.
If passed, HB 5784 could mark one of the most significant updates to Illinois’ medical cannabis program in years, offering patients greater flexibility, improved access, and a more patient-focused system statewide.
