Another cannabis dispensary in the Chicago suburbs has been targeted by an apparent Molotov cocktail attack, mirroring similar incidents that recently occurred in the city. Authorities are investigating a possible connection between these alarming events that have struck at the heart of the burgeoning legal cannabis industry.
The latest incident took place early Saturday morning at the Cannabist store on East Roosevelt Road in Villa Park. According to Villa Park Police, surveillance footage captured a suspect breaking a window at the dispensary around 4 a.m. The individual then reportedly threw a lit object, believed to be a Molotov cocktail, inside the business. Fortunately, the flame quickly extinguished, and the suspect fled the scene.
This attempted arson in Villa Park bears a striking resemblance to two recent attacks on cannabis dispensaries within Chicago. Those incidents occurred on April 19th in the 4700 block of Milwaukee Avenue and on April 27th in the 4000 block of Damen Avenue. In both Chicago cases, police described a similar modus operandi: a suspect breaking a window and then tossing a lit Molotov cocktail into the establishment. The suspect in the Chicago attacks was described as wearing a black hoodie and a mask, with a black fanny pack.
While investigations are ongoing, law enforcement in Villa Park is exploring the possibility that the same individual or group could be behind all three incidents. The motive for these attacks remains unclear, but they raise significant concerns about the security of cannabis businesses in the region.
A spokesperson for Cannabist issued a statement regarding the incidents. For the Chicago location affected, they stated: “The Jefferson Park location is temporarily closed until further notice due to an unfortunate incident currently under investigation by the Chicago Police and Fire Departments. We appreciate your patience and understanding during this time. We are working with appropriate authorities and contractors to assess the extent of the damage and will get back to operations as quickly as possible.” The statement also directed customers to visit their Villa Park dispensary. Ironically, that Villa Park location has now also been targeted.
