After Michigan being my primary place to purchase cannabis for the past 2 years, I’ve learned about that vast difference in the quality of vapes in the market. Coming from Illinois, one of the first things I noticed about Michigan dispensaries was the immensely lower prices, especially when it came to vapes. In Illinois, a 1 gram of distillate cartridge can run you anywhere from $30-$60 roughly while in Michigan, the menus are littered with deals like 10 for $80 or 15 for $100 on 1 gram distillate vapes. I definitely took advantage of those deals on my first couple trips. It didn’t really bother to check out many vape brands that weren’t part of these deals.
Long story short, I learned the hard way about the extremely low quality oil being put in these carts, some of which have had recalls in the recent news about using MCT oil, which is harmful to your lungs if vaped. (see our article on Bloom and Platinum vape recalls) After a couple rounds of hacking up a lung and majority of the carts either tasting very similar, even though they they are different “strains” (looking at you Platinum and Red Bud Roots), or having an overpowering fake flavor due to excessive amounts of added terps, to the point where they taste like nicotine vapes, I needed to change my approach to buying vapes in Michigan and one of the first more premium vapes I got was from Five Star Extracts, a brand I was already familiar with from their amazing concentrates. I figured if they can make that tasty of BHO, then their vapes must be at least alright and alright is definitely an understatement when it comes to these vapes as they have absolutely knocked it out of the park each time I’ve picked one up.
This round I went with the Cadillac Rainbows Nug Run Sugar Sauce, a strain I’m familiar with and am definitely a fan of. Cadillac Rainbows is a cross of Pure Michigan and Runtz, 2 strains that boast a fruity flavor profile. It has 81.04% THC and 0.17% CBD for 89.07% total Cannabinoids. It also has 6.70% terps with the top three being Limonene, Caryophyllene, and Myrcene. When I first saw “Nug Run Sugar Sauce” on the menu it was in concentrate form I was a bit confused on what exactly it was, so I definitely grabbed one to give it a look for myself and it contained a saucy and sugary concentrate that absolutely bursting with flavor and an aroma that jumped out of the jar. Nug Run Sugar Sauce refers to the concentrate or vape oil being extracted using nugs as opposed to shake or trim that a lot of companies use, overall meaning a higher quality product.
I’ve had a couple of these Five Star vapes over the past couple months and think the vape hardware is one of my favorites around, with consistent thick clouds with every pull and rarely will get clogged, if it does end up getting clogged a little, they include a little insert in the package that gives of tips for vape care which said to blow into the bottom of the vape until you see vapor come out the other end, gave it a shot with another disposable that I had and was blown away by how well it work, nice little protip from Five Star.
The flavor of this Cadillac Rainbows was top tier. As previously mentioned, Pure Michigan and Runtz both are strains that give off a fruity flavor and aroma, which is definitely present in this vapes flavor but there was a gassy diesel taste that was really up front the the dominant taste on this strain with a fruity berry and citrus on the backend. The combination of the two flavors were very delicious and a nice gassy twist on a fruity strain, giving it a pretty unique flavor profile. The effects on this vape were very chill and relaxing that made for a great coffee table vape while sitting on the couch with some video games. Watch out though, because multiple pulls off this vape can lead to a decent case of the munchies.
Overall, Five Star continues to be one of my most trusted brands in Michigan, especially for vapes. This had a very tasty and unique flavor that was present from first puff, all the way down to the last, and had very potent effects. This might also be one of my favorite vape hardwares as well with consistent clouds and minimal clogging even as a pocket vape for over a week. Five Star Extracts is truly a brand I cannot recommend enough.
