I recently picked up some Moonlit Rainbow Cake Nug Run Sugar Sauce by Five Star Extracts from New Standard in Saugatuck, Michigan, a spot that has become one of my go-to dispensaries for grabbing Five Star and True North jars. This one immediately stood out to me as I’m a big fan of Rainbow strains, and with Five Star having a solid reputation for doing things the right way, I told the budtender right away that I wanted it in an eighth jar.
Five Star and True North products use no CRC and really pay attention to the care and quality of what they put out.
This jar was labeled “Nug Run Sugar Sauce,” which means that full nugs were used in the extraction process instead of shake or trim like a lot of companies use for their concentrates.
Cracking the jar, the consistency leaned more on the buddery and sugary side as opposed to being overly saucy, but it was still very wet, moist, and fresh. It had that glossy, middle-golden color, not too dark and not too light, that lets you know it’s going to be flavorful before you even take a dab.
On the nose, Moonlit Rainbow Cake had a sweet and fruity aroma along with subtle baked goods notes and a creamy backend. This carried over beautifully to the flavor, with smooth hits, sweet fruitiness, and a light cake-like taste. With no CRC being used, the flavor of this strain really pops. Its golden color tells me the flower used for extraction was quality, “fire in, fire out.”
The effects were well-balanced and potent, coming on fairly quickly and settling into a relaxing but not overly sedating high, making this a nice mid-day dab to help unwind. It started with a pleasant head buzz before mellowing into a smooth, floaty body high. I especially enjoyed this as my first dab after getting home from work.
Overall, Moonlit Rainbow Cake Nug Run Sugar Sauce by Five Star Extracts checked all the boxes. It’s a great-quality product that’s both flavorful and potent. Five Star has been one of my go-to brands for a couple of years now, and I don’t see that changing anytime soon.
